Visit the Valle d’Itria, or “Trulli Valley”

Valle d'Itria

There’s lots to do and see around Alberobello

Valle d’Itria, also known as Trulli Valley is located in the southern part of the Murge plateau, in the area between the provinces of Bari, Taranto and Brindisi comprising the communes of Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Cisternino, Alberobello, Ostuni, Fasano and Ceglie Messapica. Its natural, architectural and panoramic beauty of the area will stun visitors year-round. Thanks to its natural, architectural and scenic beauty, it can amaze visitors in every season of the year.

Distinctive historical centres

A tour of the historical centres of the villages of Valle d’Itria might enthral you.

Martina Franca

seduces with a mixture of typical Itrian elements and Baroque, boasting masterpieces such as the Basilica di San Martino and its collegiate church.

Cisternino

thanks to its delightful, cosy historic centre made up of narrow streets, arcades and finely-crafted arches, it has been named as one of Italy’s 100 most beautiful villages and is definitely worth a visit during a tour of Valle d’Itria.

Locorotondo

On the other hand, in Locorotondo you’ll be struck by the many cummerse, typical houses with covered pitched roofs with stone chiancarelle, by the unusual and very charming promenade, and by the panoramic landscape overlooking the surrounding countryside.

Fasano

its historic centre is characterised by narrow alleys in white lime typical of Southern Italian town centres, specially designed to avoid the sun and help people to keep cool for most of the day.

The farmhouses

The many farmhouses all over the Valle d’Itria are an unmissable mixture of history, charm and culture, as well as amazing food and wine!
These are, in fact, typical Puglian farms – large stone buildings where farmers, shepherds and owners once lived.
Today, many have become wedding venues, while others hold educational courses for the benefit of travellers to the area.

Caves and karst

The natural karst landscape of the Murge plateau over time created a system of caves, wells, and natural fractures.
Travellers to the Valle d’Itria can visit the spectacular Grotte di Castellana: a complex and truly fascinating karst system, 3348 metres in length with depth up to 122 metres, which leads through various different rooms to the Grotta Bianca (“white cave” in Italian), the most beautiful and famous one.

Events not to be missed

There’s no shortage of events on the horizon in the region, with plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in folklore and cultural identity of the area. Take for example the Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca; the Locus Festival in Locorotondo; the Costa dei Trulli Festival; the Polifonic Festival; La Ghironda Summer Festival, and Ceglie Food Festival, to name but a few.

One of Alberobello’s highlight events is theAlberobello Light Festival in July (a large gathering focusing on visual art, using light and colour to celebrate the world’s unique places, and UNESCO Heritage) and Pasqualino Gourmet in August – an important gastronomic event to promote Alberobello’s famous sandwich, stuffed with tuna, capers, salami and provola.
